In the 1990's, he initiated the Restorative Circles approach (Circulos Restaurativos) with residents of Rio de Janeiro’s favelas, in order to provide a collective response to violence and injustice. This work has been acknowledged and supported by the Brazilian departments of Justice and Education and now extends to more than 25 countries.
