All the questions I share are didactic versions - they will need to be adapted to the circumstances in which each stage of the process plays out. Given that, it can be very useful to experiment with the didactic versions when we are first learning. Their logic is often counter-intuitive for us, accustomed as we are to punitive justice systems in many areas of our daily lives. Once the logic of each question begins to make sense to us, we have a basis for finding a way to phrase them that will be comprehensible and relevant to the people we are with at each phase of the process.

This Pre-Circle question seeks to reveal what those who have been invited to the Circle understand to have occurred. It invites them to identify the conflict through one of it's manifestations - something that has been said or done.

It seems that those hearing you use the didactic version may be attributing their presence to another's invitation, rather than to their own involvement in the conflict. In my experience of some English speaking cultures it is common to say we do things because of other people. If this is an accurate guess in this case then you might look for phrasing that bypasses this idea, and moves towards the desired meaning of the question. For example, I might ask: 'What is the act you understand has motivated this Restorative Circle?'

It's worth saying that blank looks are, in and of themselves, not a problem in this process, and quite common. The paradigm we are in is unusual, and it can take some people a little while to find their way around. In response to "I was asked to come" I might then ask: 'And what is the act that the person who asked you to come wants to look at in the Circle?', or something similar.

If I suspect that the blank look comes from a weakness in the system - possibly in this case from lack of information about the process - then I might also seek to patch that on the fly. I might then say something like: 'This process moves towards conflict by identifying an act - something that someone said or did. What do you understand that to be here?'
